We’re delighted that you’ve chosen First Friends to be part of your child’s early years journey. It’s a privilege to support their development, and we’re excited to get to know your family as we begin this special chapter together.
Now that your child is registered with us, our nursery manager will begin preparing for their start.
We’re looking forward to welcoming your child soon!
Planning Ahead & Making Changes
For families who have registered well in advance, we understand that circumstances and childcare needs can change over time. While we’ll always do our best to accommodate changes to your child’s booked hours, please note that due to high demand, this may not always be possible.
If you do need to request a change to your registered schedule, please contact your nursery manager as soon as possible.
Please remember: We require eight weeks’ written notice if you wish to cancel your child’s place.
Our settling-in sessions are designed to help your child feel comfortable, secure, and confident as they begin their nursery journey.
These sessions give your child the chance to:
They’re also a valuable time for you to share important information about your child, helping us provide the best possible care from the very start.
Settling in supports emotional security, eases separation anxiety, and lays the foundation for a happy and positive nursery experience.
During your child’s first settling-in session, we ask that a parent or carer stays at nursery to help your child begin to feel safe and comfortable in their new environment.
You’ll meet your child’s allocated key person and spend some time completing important settling-in paperwork together. This includes reviewing key nursery policies, discussing your child’s routine, any medical needs, and known allergies.
The session will last approximately one hour.
During this time, we kindly ask parents or carers to complete any remaining paperwork.
You’re welcome to stay and play with your child. If your child appears settled, you may briefly step out to help them begin adjusting to the environment.
The session will last approximately one hour.
This session will serve as a ‘trial run’ for your child’s first full day. We encourage parents or carers to leave their child during this time, helping them build independence and confidence in the new environment.
The session will last up to two hours.
To support children’s independence and wellbeing, we label each child’s water bottle so they can access their drink whenever they need it. We gently encourage regular sips throughout the day to help them stay hydrated
We kindly ask that you pack 2 to 3 full changes of clothes for your child, from head to toe, to support comfort during play and any little accidents. Please also provide appropriate outdoor wear, including hats, raincoats, and wellies, so your child is ready for all weather adventures.”
For our youngest children, we ask that you provide the essentials your child needs to feel secure and cared for throughout the day. This includes splash suits for outdoor play, nappy creams, baby bottles, and either formula or expressed breast milk as appropriate. If your child uses a comforter—such as a dummy, soft toy, or blanket—please feel free to bring that along too.
We have a teeth brushing programme built into our daily routines at our nurseries that operate full days, to support and teach your child how to keep their teeth healthy and their smiles happy. At our Basingstoke nursery, we have a visit from a dentist each term.
We use a high-quality, company-approved sunscreen that has a 5-star approval rating.
We provide hats for both children.
We supply a Movement & Mindfulness T-shirt for our toddlers and pre-school children.
We supply all nappies and wipes for babies in our care. This excludes pull-ups.
We asked our families what they wanted to know at this stage of their registration. Here are their questions and our answers:
To ensure a safe and smooth experience for all families, we usually ask that drop-off and pick-up take place in the nursery lobby or reception area. Of course, parents are welcome to come into the nursery room if their child is unsettled or upset.
In the morning, it's usually the nursery manager who will greet you, but this may not always be the case. At this point, you can hand over your child along with their belongings and share any important updates, for example, if your child is a little tired, hasn’t eaten much, or has had a disturbed night. The manager or educator will then ensure this information is passed on to your child’s key person when they are taken into their room.
The collection process follows the same approach. Your child's key person will give you a summary of their day, and you have the opportunity to ask questions.
Any further details or updates will be shared via our parental app called 'Tapestry'.
We understand how important your child’s sleep routine is, and we always aim to follow the same pattern you use at home. This will be discussed in detail during your settling-in sessions, where we’ll ask about nap times, comforters, and any specific preferences your child has.
For babies, we follow the FSIDS (Lullaby Trust) safe sleep guidance. Babies are always placed on their backs to sleep, unless a signed medical waiver is provided stating otherwise. Once babies can roll independently, we allow them to settle in their preferred position.
If your baby uses a dummy as part of their sleep routine, we’ll make sure it’s used at sleep times. FSIDS recommends phasing out dummies between 6–12 months, and we’ll work closely with you to do this gently, when the time is right.
Visual checks are carried out at least every 10 minutes while children are sleeping. Staff check for the rise and fall of the chest and overall position.
To reduce the risk of overheating, we regulate room temperature (kept between 16–20°C), avoid excess clothing and bedding, and never allow babies to sleep in items such as bouncy chairs or car seats. All babies sleep in safety-approved cots or coracles with a firm mattress and fitted sheet — no pillows, bumpers, or soft toys are used.
We’re passionate about outdoor learning—so the simple answer is: every day! Outdoor play is a natural extension of our provision, offering endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. With free-flow access to our gardens, children can move between indoor and outdoor spaces freely. We also enjoy local walks, park visits, and plenty of play in our nursery gardens.
We can administer any medication that is prescribed by a doctor but ask for the first two doses to be administered at home. We also can administer Calpol if your child has a high temperature, but you will be asked to collect your child afterwards. We use health care plans for re-occurring medicines such as inhalers. All staff are first aid trained. Only level 3 qualified staff can administer medication.
Yes, we do ask that you let us know if you're going on holiday.
As staffing and ratios remain in place, regular fees still apply during holidays. However, if your holiday is four weeks or longer, we offer a reduced rate of 30% (a retainer fee) instead of your full invoice. To benefit from this discount, we kindly ask for at least six weeks’ notice so the manager can approve the adjustment.
To help limit the spread of infection, we ask that children are kept at home when they are unwell. We’re unable to accept any child with a high temperature, and in cases of sickness or diarrhoea, children must remain at home for 48 hours after the last episode. For other illnesses, we follow specific infection control guidelines that advise us on necessary exclusion periods.
When you attend your settling-in sessions, our team will invite you—and any authorised collectors—to join our Closed Facebook group. For the safety and privacy of our existing children, we’re unable to grant access any earlier.
In the meantime, you’re welcome to sign up for our newsletter to stay up to date with nursery news and updates. You will receive the link to subscribe to our newsletter in your registration acceptance email.
